Our #houseplant of the month is the much-loved Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana). The Kentia Palm has been a mainstay in UK houses since it was introduced to Britain in the 1870s. Originally from a tiny island between New Zealand and Australia, this robust, leafy palm is highly resilient and able to thrive in low-light conditions, making it perfect for UK homes. The Kentia Palm was a particular favourite of Queen Victoria herself, and it's such a tough and sturdy plant, that it was said to be bomb-proof during the London Blitz in WWII 😱 Remember, just because Howea forsteriana can thrive in low-light conditions, doesn't mean it doesn't sometimes need a helping hand, especially during long, UK winters. The #HouseplantDoctor is in! Winter is a tough time for houseplants in the UK, and if you're a houseplant novice, you might be concerned about your plant's health. Remember, it's perfectly natural for plants to drop leaves and look a bit droopier during colder months. Don't be tempted to over-water. If a lot of your plant's leaves are turning yellow and dropping off, you might be giving them too much water. If the plant is sitting in a saucer or decorative pot cover, make sure there is no excess water in the base. Allow the compost to dry out thoroughly before giving the plant another drink. Remember the finger-tip test - push your finger about an inch or two into the soil, and if it comes out with soil stuck to it, your plant probably doesn't need to be watered yet! #plantcare #plantsofinstagram #plantcommunity #plantsmith #loveyourplants
